Advanced Microkeratome
Technology

The most fundamental aspect to LASIK is the creation of the corneal flap with the microkeratome, a highly precise ophthalmic instrument. While Dr. Machat has performed tens of thousands of LASIK procedures, he also recognizes the importance of having the most advanced microkeratome technology and the best blades, which are never reused on another patient, a practice of some other clinics. Dr. Machat has been a consultant to three companies helping develop microkeratome technology, and has a variety of microkeratomes available to him to create the protective corneal flap.

The B&L Automated Corneal Shaper, the original gold standard for LASIK, creating a classic nasally hinged corneal flap. The B&L Hansatome (right) the latest microkeratome advance, is a pivoting unit which creates a superiorly hinged flap beneath the upper eyelid. The Hansatome is preferred for larger and flatter corneas and patients with excessively large pupils. It has become the new gold standard. Dr. Machat was one of the first handful of LASIK surgeons in the world to utilize the Hansatome and was a consultant during its development.

Dr. Machat has also utilized the Moria C-B pivoting microkeratome which also positions the flap hinge beneath the upper eyelid, and since this unit is somewhat smaller than the Hansatome, it allows patients with smaller orbits to be more safely treated.

As a consultant for Allergan's new titanium unit, Amadeus and LaserSight's UltraShaper and UniShaper, Dr. Machat was instru-mental in helping develop these microkeratomes of tomorrow. Dr. Machat has the Summit SKBM microkeratome for larger, higher quality nasally hinged flaps. He is also experienced with the Moria and Nidek units.

Dr. Machat is able to provide improved quality and safety for his patients because of his commitment to both advanced laser technology and microkeratome technology, combined with his unsurpassed experience he will continue to be both the pioneer and leader in LASIK vision correction in North America.
